Mr. Ogata has been working in the Japanese railway sector for more than 46 years. At East Japan Railway Company (JR East), after various management positions including General Manager of Customer Service, Investment Planning, Labor Relations, Public Relations and Transport Safety, he was appointed as Executive Director of the Transport and Rolling Stock Department in 2002. From 2008 to 2011, as Executive Vice President, he took the full responsibility of the management of the safety and reliability of a railway network with 17 million daily passengers. At the same time, he also led key railway projects such as the speed increase of the High Speed Rail up to 320 km/h, the evolution of ICT and the development of the smart IC card “Suica”, which JR East introduced in 2001. As Vice Chairman from 2011 to 2020 and as Standing Distinguished Fellow of JR East since June 2020, he has been driving the open innovation in the management and use of technology to enhance the quality and variety of JR East business domains. Mr. Ogata was elected President of UITP in June 2015. During his term, he enhanced and empowered public transport sector all over the world through his innovative vision. He then led the UITP Asia-Pacific Division as President from 2017 to 2019, and today continues to contribute for the promotion of public transport as Honorary President of UITP.
